Medical Disclaimer

MyFlareSA hosts a family of Companion apps for South Africans living with a chronic condition, or caring for someone who does. No Companion app — whether fully deployed or currently in testing — is a medical device, a diagnostic tool, or a substitute for professional medical care.

This disclaimer is written to apply across the whole Companion app family, including apps added after this page was last updated. It describes the boundaries every Companion app follows, rather than naming each app individually. See the homepage for the current list of apps and their status.

What no Companion app does

Disease activity scores

Where a Companion app offers a published disease activity scoring tool (for example BASDAI, SLEDAI-P, or HBI), it displays the numeric score and its published severity band only. It never interprets what that score means for your specific case.

AI-assisted features

Where a Companion app offers an AI-assisted feature (for example, explaining a result or report, or checking a claim), it uses an AI model to help explain documents and evidence in plain language. Outputs are informational only, are not personalised medical advice, and always include a disclaimer. Always confirm findings with your treating doctor. Not every Companion app includes an AI-assisted feature.

Your data

Health data you log in any Companion app — symptoms, flares, medications, appointments, vitals, safety plans, personal notes, and vault documents — stays on your own device and is never stored on a server. See our privacy policy for full detail on what account information, if any, is collected for a given app.

Apps in testing

Some Companion apps are currently being made available for testing and feedback before public launch. Every boundary on this page applies fully to apps in testing, in the same way as to fully deployed apps. Treat anything a testing app outputs as provisional.

In a crisis

Some Companion apps include a crisis safety net that surfaces helplines whenever a check-in indicates risk. If you are in a mental health crisis right now, call the SADAG Suicide Crisis Helpline on 0800 567 567 or the Cipla Mental Health Helpline on 0800 456 789 (both toll-free, 24 hours).

In a medical emergency, do not use any Companion app. Call 112 or go to your nearest emergency department immediately.
